One more article from the RSS feed before I pass-out for the night (so sleepy). An interview with our beloved Captain Kirk, 1.0.

Here be the link.

Excerpt:

Shatner played Capt. James T. Kirk in the NBC television series and in seven films of the franchise.

"It was so successful and had such importance on this culture that continues to this day. I owe my celebrity to that."

CNN wrote an article on fan fiction, it's not nearly as in-depth nor as well written as the "Times" article from some months before, and it focuses mainly on a Twilight fanfic writer who I guess is getting a movie made from her work? Good for her! That's kind of awesome (and I say this as someone who has no interest in "Twilight" whatsoever because the relationship dynamics in that series hit on every single one of my DO NOT WANT tropes, but I do think it's really cool that this fanfic writer 'broke on through to the other side', to coin a phrase ;)). But the article did give a shout-out to Star Trek and Kirk/Spock - beautiful, wonderful ship that it is (shipper bias? I know not of that which you speak. O:-) ).

Here be the link.

Excerpt:

Coppa added, "The wonderful thing about fandom is that you realize you're not alone."

So this guy at the "New York Times" has opinions about adults reading books written for young adults.

To him I say this: you should spend less time worrying about what people are reading and more time concerned that hardly anyone is reading at all (and those that do should be applauded, not made to feel embarrassed for their choices, you unmitigated douche).

As you can probably tell, this article got me a bit fired up. ;)

I remember when the novel "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" was released people were positively shocked that a book had a higher opening weekend then the blockbuster movie at the time... and that I find just sad. Not that HP out sold the movies, oh no, that made me ecstatic, but that people were so shocked that it did.

So Brent Spiner thinks that TNG is next in line to be Rebooted, given the success of JJ Abrams stab at it. No, serious, totally not joking, he had this to say about the topic (from trekmovie.com)...

I don’t know any twenty-something actors [laughs]. I do think it is likely they will reboot Next Generation some day. I don’t see Star Trek ever ending.

So I thought, hey, let's have some fun and cast this mamma. :D

I vote James McAvoy as a young Picard, who's with me? (<- unoriginal, I know, couldn't resist. :D)

Your list of characters:

Jean-Luc Picard
William Riker
Data
Geordi La Forge
Worf
Beverly Crusher
Deanna Troi

Bonus Points: Q, Tasha Yar, Laxwana Troi, Ro Laren (will just skip right over Wesley Crusher, the Martiest Stu of all Marty Stus ever)

And now something to make you smile...

Leonard Nimoy just announced on Twitter that his Star Trek store has officially opened. All products are Star Trek/Spock related. Here is the link for anyone interested:

In other news, I really do need to find an icon with just Spock in it, lol. This is the second time I realized that I don't have one, but I forgot to go looking for one after that last time (got the attention span of a gnat, what can I say? ;)). Link me to some great ones, anyone? :D

[Error: unknown template qotd]Kirk. I admire that he is an individualist. I like that he thinks outside the box - utilizes creative problem solving. I think its great that he absolutely refuses to accept defeat, that, for Kirk, no task, no matter how badly the odds are stacked against him, is impossible. I admire his bravery, his strength of conviction, his cunning and his loyalty. And I love his sass. ;)

Thought you guys might get a kick out of this.

The article

Excerpt:

Star Trek has made an entire world imagine the unimaginable and dream of the unthinkable, from the magical teleports to the glorious tricorders that are able to diagnose any injury or illness or analyze the environment of ships, planets and other structures. Now, Trekkies may be just one step closer to their dream: the Star Trek tricorder has become a reality.

Warning: It is entirely possible I'm just being grouchy. I'm dieting, I'm also trying to give up drinking soda, and I've had a terrible case of insomnia lately, so trust me when I say I'm well aware that I'm not at my best at present. Plus it's been a lo-ong, oh ever so long, week. :|

Also, to be entirely fair, the 'Kirk as an intergaltic slut' stigma within Trek fandom has always kind of irked me. It's a bit of a festering wound. I'm a Kirk girl, I admit it, so yes, I find it a bit... distressing, that out of all the man's accomplishments that is what fandom most associates him with. A couple of years ago I even made a post about it, which, to summarize, pretty much stated that if you disregard the times, in TOS, that Kirk flirted to get the crew out of a scrape, or feigned interest to discover whether he had a man who had committed genocide on-board his ship, or he was under the influence of mind-altering tears, the list of his genuine, consenting romantic encounters was actually rather short. Very short. In fact, to elaborate further in a way my post did not, the man only had actual sex twice during the course of three seasons of TOS, and both those times where under dubious conditions (i.e. amnesia + forced marriage, and being forced under threat of death). Don't want to take my word for it? Here is a very awesome piece of meta on the topic.

Edit: Remembered the link to another awesome bit of meta on the subject of J.T.K and misconceptions while I was not-sleeping last night. Also, I wrote an essay on the topic of there being more to Kirk than his penis not too long ago, for anyone interested.

So tonight I was cruising trekmovie.com, as you do, and clicked on the link featuring a trailer of Chris Pine's new movie "People Like Us", which, incidentally, was written by two of the three Star Trek writers, i.e. Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzmen. Most Trek fans on that site seem pretty receptive to the new film, a couple voiced their concerns that it seems rather... geared towards a limited demographic of people, thus I come across this exchange in the comments:
