Well. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but Jim knew when to take what he could get and run with it.

He grinned as a wild thought came to mind. "So, Mr. Spock -- would you happen to play chess?"

No worries. We can have the story diverge two ways. Reminds me of these 'chose your own adventure' books I read as a child. Where, at certain parts in the story, the lead character had to make a decision and you could continue reading multiple scenarios based on the different outcomes of that decision. :-)
