Driven to further this growing sense of camaraderie, Jim shook his head.

"I've got to hand it to you, I'm not sure how I would react to meeting another version of me," he admitted, shivering at the thought of it. Two Jim Kirk's in one universe? His mother (and Bones... and Pike, now that he thought of it) would likely go into cardiac arrest. "A part of me would be curious. Who wouldn't? I'd have a list of questions a mile long. But another part of me would be a little... uh, disturbed, I guess. I probably wouldn't be able to prevent myself from comparing the two of us. And I'm not sure I'd be able to resist the temptation to ask about the future. And I'm definitely sure I don't want to tempt fate that way..."

If Spock's gaze had been intense before, now it was the very definition of the word. Jim felt as if he were being taken apart and put back together, piece by piece, as if Spock were trying to figure him out.

Jim snorted, mentally.

He wished Spock luck with that. Aside from Bones, who still didn't even know the half of it, no one else had ever been able to, well, get him.

He could only hope that Spock's reorganization of 'his knowledge of Kirk' turned out to be a little more favorable than the Vulcan's previous impressions of him.

He'd never worked this hard to engage someone in conversation in his life, and had never cared so much for anyone's good opinion, but Spock? Their interaction? It was important, somehow. At least, it seemed important.

He couldn't quite understand the urgency, but he was very much motivated in this. And had more invested in it than he was really comfortable with or wanted to examine too closely.

"Tempt fate?" the Vulcan asked, at last, finishing his scrutiny and settling back in his chair.
